Baby is under the control of a mobster known as Doc (Kevin Spacey). He is the brains behind this operation and many before and those that come later in the film. Baby had the misfortune to try to heist Doc’s Mercedes years earlier, but got caught. So now he’s having to pay Doc back, one heist at a time as a driver. The music is an essential character in the film.

Maybe even the most important character. Baby is constantly hooked up to an i. Pod because his hearing was damaged in a car accident when he was a kid. One that killed his bickering parents (Sky Ferreira and Lance Palmer) and left him with a scar or two and a bad case of tinnitus. The next job features a different cast of thieves but Baby is always the driver. This time we get Eddie (Flea), JD (Lanny Joon) and the evil Bats (Jamie Foxx). For the first time Baby questions what he is doing as Bats unnecessarily kills a guard.

Baby lives with a deaf, wheelchair- bound man (CJ Jones) who was his foster father. One of the places where Baby finds solace, is the restaurant where his mother used to work. It is there he meets cute with Debora (Lily James), a waitress. They immediately find the spark, but Baby is reluctant to go too far, given his current job. But one more job and he is clear of his debt to Doc. Baby and Debora plan to just drive out of town headed to who- knows- where with just themselves and of course Baby’s music collection. It is a bad mix. While the chemistry between Baby and Debora is perfect and fun to watch, Bats addition is the polar opposite.

He rubs everyone the wrong way. What is consistent throughout the movie is the great soundtrack. Baby’s music ranges from T. Rex to The Dave Brubeck Quartet. From The Beach Boys to The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. From Young MC to The Commodores. And it all is timed to the action in the movie.

Hell even the gunfire is set to music. The movie isn’t necessarily ground breaking. One last job? But it is to the extent that it is all very fun and very entertaining and oh the music.
